What is volunteering?

Although this may seem like an easy question, it’s not! Volunteering isn’t always easy to define because there are so many different ways to do it. While one volunteer may spend her time mentoring children, another might help teach language courses. Of course, these are just two examples. There are endless possibilities out there to get involved with. Ultimately, the most important thing about volunteering is giving your time. Volunteers offer their time to those who need it in exchange for no tangible reward. At the end of the day, volunteers are givers!

Is it for me?

The short answer to this question is yes! Volunteering is for everybody. Of course, varying circumstances will affect the ways that volunteers can help. However, anyone with a little bit of time to spare and a desire to help others can volunteer in some way. Whether you have some skills you wish to share with others or want to develop new ones, there are places to help. There are so many benefits to volunteering that we could write a whole blog post just about that. However, its worth mentioning that even though you won’t be rewarded financially, volunteering provides many rewards in and of itself.

How can I help?

Since there is such a variety of volunteer opportunities available, the answer to this question depends on your personal background and situation. For example, if you were an accountant, there are great organizations that help promote financial literacy. Were you a teacher before you retired? There are always organizations looking for educators to help out as well. Regardless of your professional background, your personal experiences are sure to have taught you skills that you can share with others. Even just spending time with children as a mentor and friend can mean a lot! Take a look at this awesome video about becoming a volunteer grandparent!

Where do I volunteer?

Finding a place for seniors to volunteer doesn’t have to be difficult! A great way to start is by asking yourself what you are interested in and passionate about. Do you really care for animals? Are you actively engaged in politics? Would you feel fulfilled by working to address women’s issues? Regardless of what you’re interested in, the chances are good that there are volunteer organizations working in that space. There are both national organizations and local ones to get involved with. Starting with figuring out what your passions are can help you identify organizations that you might like to work with.

What else should I know?

Ultimately, there is no one way to volunteer. The important thing is that you are able to find a way to help while doing something you are passionate about. Since you will only be rewarded with thanks and the satisfaction of seeing your work help others, it is important to find issues you care about so that you don’t get tired of volunteering. That said, even if you do, there are always new ways for seniors to get involved! There are even ways to turn a volunteer experience into an abroad experience. Organizations like Projects Abroad offer opportunities for older volunteers to find volunteer positions in another country. However you choose to spend your time volunteering, it is sure to be highly rewarding!
