A single veteran would receive $1,644 monthly, veteran couples would receive $1,949, and the surviving spouse would receive $1,056. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is an option for those who are blind or have a disability or have children, but must have little income and assets, over 65 years of age, and a current U.S. citizen. Once approved, payments are sent directly to the independent living community, in amounts no more than needed. This option allows a much more flexible system requiring little or no collateral.
