Even though the specific causes of LOBD are relatively unknown, there have been a number of factors linked to the development of this condition. Several links have been made to genetic factors, although the connection is not as strong as with younger people.
Other potential factors include neurological illness and cerebrovascular diseases in a subset of patients.
Research has also shown the presence of white matter hyper-intensities, or small lesions found throughout the brain to precipitate this disorder in some people. Other possible causes include posterior cortical atrophy (Benson’s syndrome), a condition that involves the shrinkage of the back portion of the brain.
