Although there is currently no cure, several methods are available to treat Parkinson’s disease. Medications are usually the most common treatment option and include several different options, many of which are used in conjunction with one another.

Carbidopa-levodopa: The most effective medication currently. It consists of a natural chemical which converts to dopamine once consumed. Side effects can include nausea or lightheadedness. This medication can also be delivered through a feeding tube for patients with advanced stages of the disease.

Other medications such as dopamine agonists and MAO-B inhibitors may be combined with Levodopa in order to promote the uptake of dopamine or slow its metabolization. Doctors may also prescribe COMT inhibitors, anticholinergics, and Amantadine for excessive tremors and issues with movement or early stages of the disease.

Surgical Procedures: A common procedure is the implantation of electrodes into specific brain regions known as deep brain stimulation (DBS). Unfortunately, DBS doesn’t stop the progression of the disease and is only used to keep severe symptoms under control.
