My elderly mother seems low on energy and a bit removed from conversations. She says she's not sick, so I'm wondering if she could be depressed?

Perhaps. Depression is not always cut and dry and can appear in varying degrees of severity. However, your mother may be sad about a situation that she isn't talking to you about. Are you aware of the differences between situational sadness and depression?

Has your mother ever struggled with depression when she was younger? If not, some event may have triggered geriatric depression. Some of those triggers include major life events, isolation, and age-related complications.

Try and talk to your mother one-on-one and see if there has been a recent event that may have her feeling this way. We recommend that you continue to keep an eye on her so that you can share any concerns you may have with her doctor.
