Seniors are affected slightly different by depression than the rest of the population. Geriatric depression typically coincides with another illness or age-related disability. In general, depression rates tend to be higher in the elderly population. The reason for this is because as they age, seniors begin facing mental and physical challenges.

Triggers of depression in the elderly include:

  • Changes in brain chemistry due to aging
  • Major life events such as death of a family member or a senior moving out of their home
  • Isolation
  • Age-related complications including loss of mobility or diagnosis of a chronic illness
