With diabetes, one’s blood glucose (blood sugar) is too high. In order for your body to maintain energy, your blood needs to carry this glucose to the cells of various organs and tissues. To help the process, a chemical produced in the pancreas called insulin helps to break glucose down so it can be absorbed. When the pancreas does not make enough insulin, excessive glucose remains in the blood and causes various health problems which may lead to diabetes.
