There are many medications that can be used in the treatment of diabetes. The best defense to keeping your diabetes under control is by balancing your blood glucose levels. To do this, doctors will prescribe insulin. Some of the medications that doctors might prescribe are:

  • Pramlintide - An injectable drug that is taken before meals to help lower blood sugar, reduce appetite, and slow the time it takes for your stomach to empty itself.
  • Alpha-glucosidase inhibitors - Medications taken before meals to lower blood sugar and help the body break down starch-filled foods.
  • Biguanides - Medication that decreases the amount of sugar your liver makes and decrease the amount of sugar your intestines absorb.
  • DPP-4 inhibitors - Help the body continue to make insulin.

There are many other medications that your doctor may prescribe to you. Talk with your doctor to determine what types of medications would work best for you.
