My mother’s doctor suggested that she start exercising. She told the doctor she would, but now that we’re home she keeps saying exercise doesn’t help. What are some benefits of exercise?

Sometimes older adults are reluctant to exercise because they may think that they are too old, or may get hurt if they exercise.

However, let your mother know that exercise can help to prevent or delay certain diseases like arthritis, heart disease, and diabetes. In fact, a lack of exercise may lead to more doctor visits, more hospitalizations, and more use of medications. Physical activity can even help reduce feelings of depression, manage stress, and improve your mood.
