Your doctor or pain management specialist will use a tool called a personal pain assessment. American Chronic Pain Association’s (ACPA) Quality of Life scale was designed to create a foundation for doctor’s to understand their patient’s pain and how it affects important areas of daily living.

They will probably ask your mother to keep a pain diary to keep details on things like:

  • The location of pain;
  • The severity of pain;
  • The activity that triggered or increased pain; and
  • The medication/treatment that was used to soothe the pain.
