Eye floaters are small spots that move around your eye. They may appear as black or gray dots, squiggly lines, rings, or threadlike strands. They should not interfere with your vision. Most of those floaters are small parts of a protein called collagen. They are part of the gel-like substance in the back of your eye. As you age, the fibers that make up this gel shrink down and clump together. The shadows of these clumps are what you see when you see the floaters. If you see a flash of light specific to your vision only, this is not the same as a floater and you need to see an eye doctor immediately. Such instances can indicate serious issues with the light-sensitive portion of the eye called the retina.
