My mother has fallen ill and needs someone to look after her. My boss is willing to be flexible. What are some options I can do to help balance caregiving with work?

It’s great that your boss is understanding and willing to help you manage your schedule. Can you telecommute or work remotely? You may have to supply your own equipment, or in some cases the company will provide you with the equipment to be able to work at home.

If that is not an option, see if you can work what is called a compressed schedule. This may mean working longer hours for 4 days a week so you can have 3 days off. Or perhaps, instead of working 9 AM to 5 PM, you can work from 12PM to 8PM so that you have mornings off to take your senior to appointments.

Also consider adult day care services. You will be able to drop your senior off and ensure they will be supervised and get their medications, as well as social stimulation. When you use adult day care services, you give yourself a break from caregiving, and this may also allow you to work more regular hours at work.
