My mother is too embarrassed to tell her doctor, but I have a suspicion she has urinary incontinence. How can I be sure?

Incontinence can be as severe as a sudden strong urge to urinate to mild, frequent urges each accompanied by varying levels of leakage. Doing simple exercises or even surgery can treat mild to severe incontinence. Start by letting her know that this is common for many seniors and is nothing to be ashamed of - it's just a natural part of aging! If she is too embarrassed to attend an appointment by herself, you can always accompany her to ensure she gets the right treatment. Left untreated, incontinence can lead to urinary tract infections and other risks.
