Almost no business or government agency will ask for your social security number so that is a major red flag right there. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Frequently, scammers targeting seniors will use lavish rewards to entice you to give up personal information. Others will threaten you by saying that you owe backed taxes or that you haven’t paid parking tickets. These local or national government warnings will usually come through via mail, not telephone or email.

Also, don’t be fooled if the call is from a local area code, many computer programs can be altered to automatically show up as a local phone number.
