I am worried that my grandmother is abusing her pain medication, which she has been prescribed for years and years. How common is this in the senior community, and what precautions can I take?

Americans 65 years of age or older make up only 13 percent of the U.S. population, yet they consume approximately 33 percent of all prescription drugs, so they’re at a greater risk for abusing their medication. If your grandmother is taking her pain medication more than what she is supposed to, this is considered abuse. You should consult her doctor for advice on what to do. Another thing you can do immediately, for your own peace of mind, is to go to the pharmacy and see if you can purchase Narcan or Naloxone. It is an anti-overdose drug that you can keep on hand. If you suspect she is overdosing on her pain medication, you could use it to revive her. Again, the best thing to do is to talk to her physician and a pharmacist as soon as possible.
