In some cases and by certain technicalities, yes. In order to preserve multi-dose vials of the flu vaccine, an ethyl mercury-based preservative called thimerosal is used to prevent germs, bacteria, and/or fungi from contaminating the serum. However, most single-dose vials and pre-filled syringes or nasal sprays do not contain this preservative because they are only used one time.
