While it may be costly, many people agree that seniorizing your home with things like stair lifts can still be more affordable than other senior living options. It also allows your senior to remain in independent and in the home longer. The goals of modifying your home for a senior include reducing the chance of falls or injuries, and for the senior to maintain mobility as long as possible.

The first thing you want to do is focus on high-traffic areas. These spaces should be kept open and clutter-free to ensure ease of travel. Rugs or loose carpets need to be secure to prevent slips, trips, and falls. If you have loose floorboards, they should be repaired as soon as possible. When looking at these high-traffic areas, make a modification to nearby furniture and fixtures with sharp edges to prevent injuries.

Ensure that stairs all have guardrails. In the bathroom, install things like grab bars, non-slip mats, and walk-in tubs. The key in the bathroom is keeping floors and surfaces dry to prevent slips. Are the steps and pathway leading to your home safe or crumbling, creating a hazard for your senior? During inclement weather, especially winter, it is critical to have these walkways cleared of any debris. Also, ensure that your fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are in full working order.

Are items at a height where your senior can reach them without having to use a stepping stool or ladder, which could result in a fall? Remember that every home is unique. As your senior continues to age, they will become less mobile and may need more help staying safe in the home. Keep these tips in mind when considering your home safety planning.
