Since my mother died, my dad hasn't been keeping in touch as well as he used to. The last time I saw him, he looked a lot skinner. I am worried that he is not eating enough. Could he be malnourished?

Your father’s weight loss could be from a number of factors. However, if you have reason to believe he may not be eating enough or is not getting enough nutrients, here are some signs to look for that may indicate malnutrition in seniors:

  • Observe their eating habits. Can you plan to have dinner with your father? Try to get an idea of what he is eating; how much he is eating; and how often he is eating. Does he have food in his home? Check if it is expired.
  • Unintentional weight loss. Try and determine the reason why your father has lost so much weight. You may want to talk with his doctor to see if there are any underlying medical reasons that he has lost weight.
  • Medication effects. Talk with your father’s doctor and find out how he is affected by any medications he may be taking.
  • Other signs. There are other signs, such as depression or alcoholism, that may curb their appetite or affect the way their body absorbs nutrients.
