There are many different medications that can be used to treat chronic pain in the elderly. Non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) include ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin. These can be obtained over the counter and typically work well for acute pain. Antidepressants have pain-relieving properties that can help with chronic pain in lower dosages. Anti-seizure medications, also known as anticonvulsants, are helpful with certain types of nerve pain such as burning or shooting pains. Opioids need to be used with caution, however, they are very effective in controlling chronic pain. Opioids are not particularly effective for controlling nerve pain.
