It depends on what the person is prescribed. Prescription drug abuse in the elderly can go unnoticed until it is too late. If you think that your senior or someone you love has overdosed on prescription medication, call emergency medical services immediately.

If a person is taking opioids, which may include oxycodone, hydrocodone, morphine and more, there is something called the opioid overdose triad. The signs you should look for are:

  • Pinpoint pupils
  • Unconsciousness
  • Respiratory depression

If the person is taking benzodiazepines, which may include diazepam, lorazepam, alprazolam, and clonazepam, here are some signs you should look for:

  • Impaired reasoning
  • Confusion
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Slurred speech
  • Lack of coordination
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Coma
