My parents are set on choosing an independent living facility, but my dad was just diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, is it still possible for them to live independently?

Of course! If they plan on moving into an independent living community together then it will still be possible for them to support each other. Depending on how your father's condition progresses, hiring an additional home care aid may be an option to provide additional support after they make the move. If it is financially viable, they can also consider a continuing care retirement community which would allow either one of them to transition between the different levels of care as needed.
