Although there is a general shift toward using the term ‘personal care home’ to describe assisted living in a warmer light, some states may still make distinctions between the two in terms of licensing. Generally speaking, assisted living communities are larger campuses with many residences and the availability of private rooms, whereas personal care homes may feature a more home-like setting with fewer residents and shared room and board. The two may also vary in the amount of medical care provided, with assisted living generally featuring a higher availability of trained nursing staff.
