This is a less common scam type, although it does affect seniors. Essentially, a scammer sends you a fake check, asking for your to pay the fees or taxes involved with the prize money. Then, while you are sending this money, the check will bounce. As a rule of thumb, if you receive a check from someone you don’t know, it’s very unlikely to be legitimate. Even if you’re desperate for money, do not cash it!
