My mom is always confused, and it’s hard to tell if she can’t hear or if she has dementia or both. Are these two issues connected?

Interesting question! There is actually a link between cognitive decline and hearing loss. Your mom could be confused and be able to hear fine, or she could be confused because she is losing her hearing and therefore her cognitive ability has declined because she hasn’t been processing what she’s listening to. The best thing to do is to see an audiologist and get her hearing checked. Once you establish whether or not she needs hearing aids, then it will be easier to evaluate her memory loss.
