8 Winter Activities For Seniors

As the winter weather slowly arrives, it’s important that you find some winter activities for seniors that will keep them active as well as prevent them from going crazy inside their own home. Getting stuck inside all winter is no way to spend time, so finding a few fun and/or productive activities can go a long way. Below are just a few of our suggestions of great winter activities for seniors.

8 Winter Activities For Seniors

1. Weekly Dinners

A great way for seniors to enjoy the colder months is to go out to eat or host family dinners. There’s nothing better than spending the afternoon with family enjoying a hot meal and good company. This also creates a much-needed routine and a weekly event to look forward to for both you and your loved one.

2. Short Walks With Company

It’s still important to stay active even as the temperature begins to drop. Seniors can take small walks (weather permitting) around the neighborhood. However, make sure to bring a family member or loved one with in case of a fall. Getting fresh air can be one of the best winter activities for seniors.

3. Scrapbooking

Preserving memories can be the perfect winter activity for seniors. This can also help combat seasonal depression because they’ll be reminded of all the good times they’ve had over the years. Whether it’s alone, or with grandchildren, scrapbooking is a great indoor hobby to partake in.

4. Host Game Night

Another great indoor activity can be hosting a game night with friends and family. Mix in traditional games like Monopoly and Trivial Pursuit, with newer games like Heads-Up. This is a great way to include family members of all ages and can be one of the most satisfying winter activities for seniors.

5. Make Chores A Family Event

Everyone knows chores can be a pretty boring solo activity, so turn it into a group activity. Cleaning around the house while accompanied by some music and family members can be a great way to bond and get some work one.

6. Holiday Decorating

Show some holiday spirit by helping your senior decorate for the holiday season. Stringing lights, hanging stockings, and partaking in other festive activities can be the perfect way to enjoy time with friends and family.

7. Volunteer

There are plenty of ways to volunteer for different organizations this winter. Whether it’s helping out at the local homeless shelter, or donating warm clothing to local elementary schools. Volunteering time at a local charity can be one of the most rewarding winter activities for seniors.

8. Movie Night

Nothing beats snuggling up with a cup of hot cocoa and a favorite movie this winter. A family movie night can be the perfect way to spend time with the family this holiday season. Movies at home can also be a lot cheaper than spending money at the local theater.

  1. I really like this article because I am having trouble connecting with my aging aunt. Do you have any instructions on this site as to how to play mah jong or pinochle? Those are two of her favorite games.
